Mary Kathryn
Comprehensive Pilates Instructor
I’m Mary Kathryn , and I grew up here in the South and in the Charlotte area. And
yes, my parents gave me a good Southern double-name and have always called me the
whole thing – but most people call me MK.
I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and majored in Journalism. I
have lived in Georgia, Texas and Florida with my career in Sales and Corporate
Communications, and I’m happy to be back home. I am thrilled to join Julie Harrington’s
staff at Club Pilates Matthews and share my love of Pilates with you. I completed the
500 hour Club Pilates Instructor Training course.
My Pilates journey is an interesting one. It was a Friday afternoon in Tampa, Florida,
and my friend and colleague, Jane, said, “Hey, want to join me and my mom at a Pilates
class on Saturday?” First, please understand that I grew up with a mother who was a
basketball coach and a dad who was a collegiate athlete. So in my mind, I thought,
“Hmmm, I don’t really want to go do a stretching yoga-like class, but I don’t want to be
rude.” So, I said to my friend, “Sure, that sounds like fun!” Little did I know how that Mat
Pilates class would teach me a thing or two (or three) about what Pilates is and is not,
and teach me even more about my core! I was reintroduced to my core muscles, and I’ll
say it was not a pleasant re-acquaintance, but I was hooked! I started taking Mat Pilates
three times a week and noticed a significant difference in my muscle tone, energy level
and overall feeling of well-being – physically and mentally.
Kudos to anyone who makes the commitment and investment in themselves to practice
Pilates. It is the best exercise practice available for long-term health. To quote the
master, Joseph Pilates, “Pilates is complete coordination of body mind and spirit.”
