Flexibility for golf.  Who knew?

Unfortunately you can’t just purchase flexibility at a pro shop or golf store, but it can be developed!  Flexibility is crazy important for golfers. If you are a golfer who suffers from back, wrist, shoulder, hip, knee, or neck issues you might relate.

During a golf swing you work in three different planes of motion:  Sagittal (front/back), Frontal (side-to-side), and Transverse (rotating). A lack of flexibility, in any of those planes of motion, results in faults in your swing and inconsistent performance, which are clearly not great for your game. How often does your ball go astray? Limited flexibility is also often the cause of your aches and pains.

I know, blah blah blah, let's get to the good stuff!  Just one more thing before we show you some basic and easy moves to help improve flexibility and strengthen your core.  We can be proactive about finding tight or shortened muscles in the body by visually inspecting our body’s symmetry in all planes of motion. That’s right, you don’t have to experience pain to identify opportunities for improvement. If your body leans to one side you probably have tight muscles pulling you in that direction and weaker muscles on the opposite side. Pilates can help loosen tight muscles while strengthening the opposing weaker muscles. Easier said than done, but targeting areas of asymmetry has helped many of my clients feel, move, and perform better.

Now for the fun stuff! Below are some very basic Pilates exercises to help improve your flexibility in all ranges of motion. These can even be used as a quick warmup before a round of golf!

  • Lying roll downs
  • Saw
  • Standing side bend
  • Standing roll down
  • Standing side roll downs

For clients looking for an extra edge in their golf game I often recommend a consistent reformer Pilates regimen as it maximizes improvements in flexibility, core strength, and range of motion.  Many of my clients have experienced improvements in their game and so could you! If you are remotely curious I highly encourage you to try a complimentary class at your local Club Pilates.
