Pilates Fun Facts!
How was Pilates created?
Joseph Pilates was detained in an internment camp on the Isle of Man and developed what is now known as Pilates. He insisted everyone participate in daily exercise routines to help soldiers returning from WWI recover and rehabilitate from their injuries to maintain their physical & mental well-being.
Pilates was originally called ...
Contrology! This means "Mind over Muscles". When Joseph Pilates created Pilates, he originally referred to it as “Contrology”. This was because the exercises all focus on dedicated control of certain muscle groups.
What is the "Magic Circle"?
Joseph Pilates used the metal ring from around a beer barrel and connected two wooden blocks to the side of it. Its main purpose was to create alignment for clients who struggled with this concept. It can be placed on the inside or outside of the ankles all the way up to the inner or outer thighs.
What is The Powerhouse?
The Powerhouse consists of the abdomen, back, and hip muscles. New Pilates Members learn how to activate the Powerhouse and keep the whole body connected. Once your Powerhouse is fully developed, you can advance into the harder levels of Pilates. It’s with a strong powerhouse where you can progress to a high and consistent fitness level.
