The Bennington woman has dabbled in all sorts of workouts. But as she got older, she needed something easy on her body. She started Pilates about two years ago.
The practice was easy on her back, which often ached after surgery, and was easy on her joint replacements.
The 61-year-old visits Club Pilates, near 156th Street and West Maple Road, four or five times a week. She hopes the workouts — mostly done lying down on a reformer — help her age gracefully.
Q: When did you start working out and why?
A: I’ve worked out all my life. I was a gymnast in high school. In my 50s, I got stuck in the running rut. I’ve lifted weights, too. As I got older, I needed something kinder and gentler. I had injuries and decided to come to Pilates. I’ve been working out here for about six weeks.
Q: Describe your workouts. How many days per week do you exercise?
A: We work out on the reformer, with the Bosu ball, at the ballet barre and with the TRX straps. We’re always moving around. I come four to five days a week. I always feel better when I come, even if I didn’t want to.
Q: What is your current fitness goal?
A: To maintain flexibility and to get older gracefully. My mother couldn’t get out of a chair the last four years of her life. I don’t want that.
Q: What has been your biggest accomplishment?
A: I’ve had a knee replacement, a big toe replacement and back surgery. I have no pain from any of those anymore. I’ve tried everything, and this has really worked for me.
Q: What has been the toughest hurdle and how did you overcome it?
A: Overcoming my back injury. It’s been hard. Exercise and physical therapy helped the best.
Q: What helps you stay on track?
A: I’m addicted. The staff here is fabulous, and they make it fun. The folks who work out here are great, too.
Q: What is your gym pet peeve?
A: Judging. No one should ever be judged at the gym.
Q: What do you do when you aren’t in the gym?
A: I garden, play with my grandkids and read.
Q: What is the piece of equipment, supplement, clothing, etc. that you can’t live without?
A: My tops. I buy them here and they’re soft. Soft is important.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their fitness journey?
A: Go slow. Be kind to yourself. Stay at it.
